Raised Beds
Raised beds come in all shapes and sizes and can be constructed from many different types of materials. The one in the background of this image was made from planed softwood and was painted with a coloured wood preservative.
The client required an instant screen and in this situation bamboos were the ideal choice. The one used here is Phyllostachys aurea, the golden bamboo which is traditionally used for the manufacture of fishing rods. Unfortunately the soil was very poor, so we decided to construct a raised bed, fill it with good quality soil and plant into that. Clicking on the image will give you a closer look.
Reclaimed stone was used to create this raised bed. The planting hs been done in a cottage garden style and includes hellebores (Helleborus x hybridus), variegated irises (Iris pallida 'Variegata'), and golden oregano (Origanum vulgare 'Aureum').
A variety of climbers were used on the wall - the climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea petiolaris), a climbing rose and, for its wonderfully scented early spring flowers, Akebia quinata.
